Proud to be British

6th June 2012

What a weekend! I think most people are still trying to wipe off the red, white and blue face paint, feeling proud to be British and sick of the sight of picnic food!?

The Queen is the most remarkable lady, and I think the UK threw a pretty good party to show her how much we love her.

I was honoured to be part of the TV celebrations. On the Sunday I spent the day in the rain (like millions of others) and covered the Jubilee Pageant aboard HMS Belfast.

I heard wonderful stories from some of the HMS Belfast veterans, who were funny, cheeky and so proud to have the Queen acknowledge their ship. I have had my make-up done in some weird places over the years, but in the bowels of a huge ship surrounded by the sleeping quarters is definitely up there!

Up on deck I wore my trusty red rain mac to keep me dry.

After a long bath and night in my nice warm pjs, I was up again on Monday morning to enjoy the BIG Jubilee Concert.

I got to interview my total hero Sir Elton John for the first time, and Sir Paul McCartney, who is always lovely to chat to.

Sir Cliff was also a lot of fun, and was wearing the grrooviest trainers of the day…

The atmosphere outside Buckingham Palace was electric, as everyone waved flags at the Queen Victoria Memorial at the foot of The Mall.

I thought Prince Charles's speech was wonderful, and the Queen looked incredible in a Royal black cape.

I also got my photo taken with one of the Coldstream Guards, who I was shocked to see smiling. They usually appear like statues but this one was very nice and chatty!

On Tuesday I was back outside the Palace, but this time in St James’s Park with my dear friend Jake Humphrey.

Suggs popped by…

... as well as Paloma Faith, Mark Foster, Kelly Sotherton and Angela Griffin.

I hope whatever you did this weekend was fun and that you’ve dried out from all the rain!

Love and Peace

  • Good pics! I did actually wonder this weekend 'i wonder what fearne is doing as i know she loves the royals'. What an amazing weekend, proud to be british! X

  • How utterly boring!!!!

  • Bless your 'cotton socks' - pardon the pun.
So Proud to be British, loving all the Union Jacks & the jubilant colours throughout the celebrations, you are truely one lucky woman to have the priveledge to assist with the broadcast & keeping out spirits up during the 'reign'. God Save Our Queen x

  • Fearny ya minx . We've been in Tenerife all week for the queens bash basking in the sun and watchin it on sky tv in the room when we are in it . Not many can say I got a proper good tan while watchin the jubilee

  • The highlight for me was the river pageant, probably because I was on one of the boats! By the time we disembarked I had a real chill though - standing in the cold for hours is probably what made Prince Philip ill. It was really cold and wet out on the river...

  • My sea cadet kids Jack and Gemma had a great day on the Belfast with you, and then we had a right royal bash in the garden the next day!!

  • you are in a priviledged position to be able to all these things. would give right arm to meet some of the people you do. living in london makes it easier to get to all these events, if you lived outside london do you think you would still do all these things.

  • nice pics, but the Guardsman, was not Coldstream Guards, he was from a lesser regiment the Grenadier Guards

  • so lucky to meet so many celebs

  • Great work Fern Cotton, and you are my daughters hero...she would love to be 'you' and do your type of work. Drop me a line and I'll put you in contact with her!

  • i got a pic with you fearne. you are amazing and i love you x

  • The news here in Zimbabwe is that the BBC really made a mess of things. I want to know if someone can put up a video on U Tube as we didn't have coverage here so that I can judge for myself.

  • Great attempt at presenting on the Jubilee but some more experience before this gig would have helped you be a it more prepared.....................

  • I'm no big Royalist but full respect to the Queen for 60 years of service, and to the UK - no other country can do a celebration like we can. Very proud to be British!

  • beautiful and nice blog

  • Love your work Fearne, will always be a huge fan even from over here in Australia!!

  • You were dull, boring, ill prepared and just plain wrong for the programme, Claire Balding was great & engaging, take a note out of her example!

  • My full respect to the Queen for 60 years of service, and to the UK - no other country can do a celebration like we can. Very proud to be British!

  • Just wanted to let you know Fearne, I thought you were much better than Clare Balding a so called veteran. You were amazing so chin up and ignore the critics.
